Working with others when you are the Boss

Working with others when you are the Boss

Bing! You’ve just got a brilliant idea. An idea no one thought about. An idea that if put into action will definitely work. No doubts about it. All that’s needed is to get some people to work with you on the project. My goodness, there’s where the problem is, the people you’ve got to work with.

Ever try asking a person to answer yes or no to a question? Instead of being answered a yes or a no, they give you some other answer. That is what is so interesting about people. You ask them to decide whether they want the devil or the deep blue sea and the answer you get is that they want to sit and think about it or that there’s somewhere else besides the devil and deep blue sea direction your not giving them all the options. People are complex.

So how do you work with people?

Dilemma, you’ve got to listen to their opinion. There’s bound to be questions on how you came up with the idea. You’ve got to answer their questions. Convince them that your idea will work. Tell them to be patient to see the result and not jump to conclusion. Everyone is skeptical to a certain extent.

Then you’ve got to set boundaries and rules. Give responsibilities and roles to different people, dependant on their talents. Like getting good talkers, who are convinced that your idea will work to do either sales or recruitment.

Set targets for the project and have the team working towards it. But you also need to adjust according to the results. Sometime being ambitious is good, but you can set yourself goals to reach, but when working with a team, everything does not always go according to plan. So adjustments need to be made when you get a clearer picture of the kind of team you are working with.

When you see someone contributing very well to the team, you’ve got to be open about it. You got to point it out and publicly say they’re doing a great job. These complements encourage the team to do likewise.

After the project is over don’t forget to thank them, not only with words and their salary. A little extra always makes your team feel that you’re a great guy or woman to work under.

Hey, you’re the boss.
